Create a Set of Beautifully Etched Glasses
Come and learn the technique of acid etching onto glass with us, and we'll cut your own personalised stencils on our digital cutters right there and then in the studio. You won't believe the level of detail you can achieve!
You’ll find out how to use acid to safely etch your designs into the surface of your glass, using techniques that you can repeat at home. We’ll give you a choice of six champagne flutes, six wine glasses or six elegant tumblers to work on as well as plenty of other items to work on and some useful test glass to practise on. We use crystal glasses, so they are a bit less fragile than normal glass and have a lovely shine and ring.
This is a small group workshop, so on the day, we'll cut super-detailed vinyl stencils for you to use on our digital Cricut cutting machines. You can choose from our in-house selection, or we can create any words you like and we'll cut them for you (we have a good range of fonts but get in touch if there is one you'd specifically like). If you'd like to send us an design or motif in advance we'll convert it to a stencil for you, or advise you how to make it work *
Over three hours, we'll how you how to permanently etch your images and words to glass. Unlike paint, acid chemically alters the surface of the glass so your designs can’t scratch or wash off. Once you’ve learned how, you can work on any glass or mirror surface other than some Pyrex surfaces. This technique does use tiny quantities of acid cream, but don’t worry you’re not in danger as we’ll make sure you have gloves and glasses to keep it off you and it's a paste rather than a liquid.
This project by Sonia Bownes, founder of London Craft Club, was featured in Mollie Makes magazine in the UK and Spain and with good reason. Glass etching is a great way to create really unusual and super impressive gifts. If you've ever made sloe gin or jam to give away, you can make personalised bottles and jars to go with them. Give a unique wedding gift of a glass lantern etched with the couple's names, or make a sweet Mother's Day gesture by etching hearts on mum's mirror.

*Designs for stencils must be sent at least 7 days in advance. They must be only black and white as they will be cut into stencils for you to use. Please send them via www.wetransfer.com NOT by email! We will get back to you with advise on using your image as a stencil and we'll convert it to the correct format, but we can't do extensive design work for you. Below are example of good images for stencilling. Stencils for words and phrases are best created on the day. You can bring your own glass but we can't guarantee it can be successfully etched and it's at your own risk!
